Sello Maake kaNcube is stepping off the screen and into a different kind of spotlight. The veteran actor, whose career in South Africa's creative industry spans more than five decades, is preparing to launch a platform that brings men together to talk honestly about who they are and what they stand for.
The platform, called Men of Purpose (MOP), is designed around conversations that tackle manhood, leadership, family, personal responsibility and community. The first event is scheduled for 17 October 2026 at Sakhumzi Zoo Lake Restaurant in Johannesburg.
What is Men of Purpose about?
Maake kaNcube has been clear that MOP is not a space for men to perform or present polished versions of themselves.

"Men of Purpose is not about presenting men as perfect. It is about creating a space where men can confront themselves honestly, recognise their responsibilities and make conscious choices about the men they want to become."
He added: "Purpose begins within, and from there it extends into our families, communities and the legacy we leave behind."
The platform is open to men across age groups, professions and social backgrounds. Rather than targeting a specific demographic, the organisers say MOP is for any man willing to examine his own experiences and sit with the weight of his choices. Reflection, accountability and personal development are at the heart of what they want to build.

A broader vision beyond a single event
Those behind the initiative have described the October gathering as a starting point rather than a standalone moment. The long-term goal is to grow MOP into a broader movement that incorporates mentorship, leadership development and sustained community engagement, all grounded in an African perspective that speaks across generations.
The launch also carries wider social significance. Maake kaNcube recently responded to the discovery of women's bodies dumped in the Ekurhuleni area and in other parts of the country, calling the murders "sad and upsetting." He was direct in his condemnation.
"These acts of violence are inexcusable, and no circumstance can ever justify the termination of another person's life."
His words echoed a sentiment shared by many South Africans who have called on men to take greater accountability in the face of the country's gender-based violence crisis. In that context, Men of Purpose arrives as more than a personal development exercise; it reflects a genuine reckoning with what responsible masculinity looks like in practice.
