GAUTENG — The South African Police Service in Gauteng has opened an inquest docket after the body of an unidentified woman was recovered from a dam in Moroka, Soweto, on 20 September 2026 at approximately 17:00.

The victim, estimated to be in her twenties, was found wrapped in a duvet. The circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown at this stage, according to SABC News reporter Heidi Giokos, who broke the news on X.

10th female body discovered in Gauteng

The Soweto find marks the tenth female body to be discovered in the province within a short period. Nine women were previously found in Ekurhuleni, following the initial discovery of five bodies in Kempton Park on 12 September 2026. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the Moroka death is connected to those cases.

One detail that observers noted was that the victim in Soweto was found wrapped in a duvet, which differs from the manner in which the Ekurhuleni victims were discovered.

Panyaza Lesufi responds after 9th body found
