South African author Jackie Phamotse sparked a wave of conversation on X after posting a pointed message in the wake of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo's death. The message, cryptic but clearly directed, quickly drew thousands of views and dozens of responses from across southern Africa. On 30 September 2026, Phamotse shared a post that read:

"No mortal steals God's title and escapes judgment! You think you are God? Well, watch him respond!"

Who was Wicknell Chivayo?

Chivayo was a controversial Zimbabwean businessman who had cultivated close ties with political and religious figures across the continent. According to posts circulating on X, he had referred to himself using the Shona phrase "mukuru wemazuva," which translates to "Ancient of Days", a biblical title for God. That detail became the centrepiece of much of the online reaction to his death.

Mzansi reacts to Jackie's post

Jackie Phamotse's post unleashed a flood of responses, ranging from spiritual to deeply sceptical.

@drkstranger echoed the spiritual angle:

"God does not appreciate anyone mocking him and taking his glory. To use his title is like equating yourself to him, yet you are his creation. When he did that, his days were numbered. Even some prophets of today have mocked him, claiming they are more gifted than God."

@MManqoba27691 was blunt:

"Some deaths are said to come from God, others from the Devil. In Zimbabwe, politics has its own category. I can assure you, this has nothing with God."

@SnowBlind774 was similarly unmoved by any spiritual reading:

"He's dead. 💀 Croock going around Africa to capture the presidents."

@black_skin_head, who had previously flagged the divine title back in May, simply wrote:

"Played out as expected!! People gonna learn not to play close to the sun."
