Tyla and DJ Maphorisa, South Africa's biggest exports

It would be fitting if the powerhouses joined forces as they were crowned South Africa's biggest global exports by Spotify earlier this year.

Tyla and Maphorisa topped the 2025 Global Impact List, which ranked the top 30 local tracks with the greatest international reach.

Tyla's surprisingly low album sales

Given that she's a household name, South Africans were surprised to learn that Tyla's latest EP, WWP (We Want to Party), sold less than 4,000 copies during its first week in the United States.

The poor sales have been put down to a lack of promotion and the Water hitmaker's controversial comments about her race. The 23-year-old came under fire from Americans for describing herself as "coloured".

The backlash online was so fierce, even rapper Cardi B came to the South African's defence.

In a video shared to X by user @tyla_tygrs, Cardi says:

"Whether I speak, or not, people are going to talk. Let's look at Tyla. People have been dragging Tyla, and the girl doesn't even address it or talk about anything.
"What do you want her to do?"

In an interview with Variety last month, Tyla addressed the backlash, saying she felt conflicted by the controversy.

“That [controversy] was really confusing for me,” she said.
"I understood both sides of the story, but I was left asking, ‘OK, but what do I do now?’ When who you are is challenged, especially when it’s all you’ve ever known, it shakes you. You want to stand your ground, because if you don’t, someone else will try to define it for you.”
