Woman’s pap cupcakes leave SA furious

Taking to her social media handle under @harppiness, the babe shared yet another method to making pap after she trended in South Africa for other ways of making Mzansi's most loved food.

In the TikTok video, which has been making the rounds on social media since it was published on 10th August 2025, @harppiness detailed her step-by-step process of turning maize meal into cupcake-like creations, leaving Mzansi divided and mostly unimpressed.

In the clip, @harppiness begins by preparing a traditional stiff pap, a household favourite across the country, but then takes an unconventional turn. In the pap she added Milo, butter, and sugar and carefully scoops portions into a cupcake tray, moulding them to resemble baked goods. After adding an assortment of toppings, she presents the final product as “pap cupcakes," a snack.

However, many South Africans were not amused. The comment section was quickly flooded with reactions, with many accusing her of disrespecting a beloved traditional dish.

"Pap is going through a lot this year," said.

Some viewers defended the Johannesburg hun, arguing that food creativity should be encouraged and that she was simply experimenting. A few even said they would try the recipe themselves, suggesting it could be a quirky addition to lunchboxes or picnics.

Despite the mixed opinions, the video has undeniably grabbed attention, sparking conversations about how far one can go in reinventing traditional foods. While fusion and food trends often find space in Mzansi kitchens, pap remains a dish steeped in cultural pride, and for many, cupcakes might just be a step too far. One thing’s for sure: her “pap cupcakes” won’t be forgotten anytime soon, for better or worse.
