After news recently broke that an aspiring Russian influencer, Mariana Barutkina, had broken her spine doing the Nicki Minaj pose challenge, some social media users failed to show sympathy for the woman's injury. Instead, many saw the challenge as a teachable moment for those wanting to attempt it.

Local radio presenter Thabo Baloyi shared the news on his TikTok account, stating that Mariana injured herself weeks after giving birth. She tried to balance on a saucepan and a tin of baby formula, which were stacked on her kitchen counter.

What is the Nicki Minaj pose?

The Nicki Minaj pose challenge takes inspiration from the rapper's pose in her music video for the 2013 song High School, featuring fellow rapper Lil Wayne.

In the music video, the award-winning, controversial musician sits poolside in a pink bikini and stilettos, crouched down with her legs crossed. She impressively shows both her heeled feet flat on the ground.

While Nicki poses on a flat surface, many people on TikTok, the social media platform on which the challenge went viral, have recreated the pose with dangerous twists. From balancing on stacked dumbbells to mailboxes and beer cans, TikTok users are risking it all for the likes.
