A Durban man has learned a hard lesson about car safety after his attempt at filming content went horribly wrong.

Content creator @andile.ngcobo.221659 from KwaZulu-Natal shared a video at the end of August showing the moment his car started rolling away while he was trying to record himself, captioning it simply:

"😭😭😭My car💔"

The viral video shows the man driving into an area before stopping and opening his car door to get out. However, just before he closes the door, the car begins rolling backwards. It takes him a moment to realise what's happening, and when he does, he looks at the camera before turning and running after his moving vehicle.

Why do parked cars roll

According to car experts on Carsblog, there are several possible reasons why a car might roll even when it seems properly parked. Drivetrain slack is one common cause; this refers to the small amount of play within transmission and axle components that can cause slight rolling before the parking pawl engages. Most vehicles roll less than two to eight centimetres on an incline due to this slack.

Other reasons include a faulty parking pawl, improper use of the parking brake, transmission fluid issues, or simply parking on sloped surfaces. Even human error, such as not fully engaging the park gear or forgetting to set the parking brake, can lead to dangerous situations like this one.
