South Africa's famous Phelophepa healthcare train got a fresh wave of attention after a TikTok video gave viewers an up-close look at what happens inside. TikToker and Miss SA Top 24 contestant, Sanediko, posted the walkthrough on 13 August 2026, and it quickly resonated with South Africans who either remembered using its services or had no idea such a train existed.
The video moves through each department on board, with staff explaining what they do for patients who might otherwise go without care entirely.
What the Phelophepa train offers
Dr Tsolo Maphiri, the train's resident dentist, explained that the dental clinic covers extractions, fillings, and cleanings, as well as referrals where needed. The eye clinic screens patients, examines them, and can cut and dispense spectacles on the same day. The pharmacy department, described as the last point of contact for patients, manages minor illnesses and provides counselling for those living with chronic conditions, focusing on lifestyle management rather than dispensing long-term medication.
