FREE STATE — The case against a hospital inpatient accused of sexually harassing and physically assaulting a nurse at Thusanong District Hospital in Odendaalsrus has been elevated to the Regional Court and postponed to 26 August 2026, after a magistrate ruled the matter too serious for lower jurisdiction.
The accused, Molahlehi Takadimane, has remained in custody since his arrest by the South African Police Service following the attack on Sister Jane Taeli, a 60-year-old Professional Nurse who was working a night shift at the facility. Takadimane was an admitted patient at the time. He allegedly also attacked hospital staff members who tried to intervene during the assault.
Sister Taeli, who was due to retire in September 2026 after decades of public service, sustained severe physical injuries and continues to experience significant psychological trauma. She has publicly disclosed that she now relies on anti-depressants to manage the daily effects of the incident.
Security failures laid bare
The case has intensified scrutiny of safety conditions inside South Africa's public healthcare facilities. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) mounted picketing demonstrations outside the Odendaalsrus Magistrate's Court, formally opposing any bid by Takadimane to secure bail. Both unions stated that the attack stripped an elderly worker of her dignity.

Free State Health MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi addressed the public in the aftermath of the incident, describing workplace security as "sacrosanct" and acknowledging that healthcare workers cannot function effectively when their personal safety is at risk.
Wider pattern of violence in healthcare
Health unions have cautioned that the attack on Sister Taeli is not an isolated occurrence. Frontline workers across the Free State and Gauteng reportedly face regular threats and physical danger, driven by inadequately controlled psychiatric units and deteriorating security infrastructure in public hospitals.
The case will return before the Regional Court on 26 August 2026, by which time the state is expected to have completed its investigations and finalised the formal indictment against Takadimane.
