A South African content creator sparked a wave of laughter online after posting a street interview filmed at a taxi rank in Springs on 18 August 2026. The clip, posted by musa.thecreator on Instagram, captured a moment that many South Africans instantly recognised: speaking English somewhere it simply does not fit.

In the video, the creator approaches someone who appears to be a taxi driver at the busy taxi rank with a question about the most extreme thing the person has ever done for money. The interviewer asks in English what the craziest thing he's done for money is, and the man responds confidently in Zulu, saying that he shouldn't speak too much English as he's at the taxi rank. The caption on the video reads:

Why the taxi rank has its own language

For many South Africans, taxi ranks are spaces where vernacular languages rule. Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Tswana flow freely, and switching to English can come across as out of touch or even show-offish. The humour in the video comes from that unspoken cultural code being broken in real time.
