A Western Cape artist gave Rassie Erasmus his flowers in the most creative way possible. Welmé Booys, a visual artist from Goedverwacht in the Western Cape, drew a strikingly detailed portrait of the Springboks head coach using a single hand, all while holding her sketchbook up to the camera.

She shared the video on 14 September 2026, just as South Africa was riding high on the Springboks' historic 3-1 series triumph over the All Blacks, which ended with a 43-28 victory in Baltimore, USA. The Baltimore match also marked Erasmus's 100th Test in charge of South African rugby.

Welmé's one-hand tribute

In the selfie-style clip, Welmé held the sketchbook up to her chest and face with one hand throughout the entire process, using only her free hand to draw. She worked from a reference image, glancing between it and the camera as she mapped out Erasmus's face in marker on a spiral notebook. She started with the head and gradually added his spectacles, eyes, nose and other facial features, building up the likeness with shading and fine detail, all without once setting the book down.

The result was a remarkably accurate portrait, especially given the constraints she worked under. Welmé, who is known for her detailed charcoal and pencil portraits, captioned the post:

"Let's give Rassie Erasmus his flowers. For turning pressure into purpose, players into warriors, and a team into a symbol of hope. The mastermind behind the mighty Springboks. A man who didn't just help change the game; he helped change what the game means to South Africa."
