The rejections have come for various reasons. In at least one case, a prior recreational drug charge linked to an ex-partner was cited as grounds for denial. The unnamed 64-year-old freelance TV professional lost the chance to relocate to the USA.

The cases are part of a broader pattern documented by The Guardian, which spoke to multiple white South Africans who said they "believed the hype" surrounding the US refugee pathway, only to find themselves in a far worse position than before they applied.
