A 14-year-old North West prodigy is flying the country's flag high after earning international acclaim for his groundbreaking research into modern medicine. Brandon Mashandudze, a Grade 9 pupil at Curro Mahikeng, was named an American Lung Cancer Scholar following his work on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance early lung cancer screening methods.

Organised by the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative, the Lung Cancer Innovation Challenge challenges young minds across the globe to propose evidence-based solutions, policy frameworks, and advocacy strategies for early cancer detection.

The recognition is awarded by the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (ALCSI), a US-based non-profit founded by doctors and researchers from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Led by thoracic surgeon Dr Chi-Fu Jeffrey Yang, the international initiative invites students globally to develop evidence-based solutions, medical innovation policies, and advocacy frameworks for early cancer detection. Beyond this international honour, Brandon has demonstrated a strong track record in science, having previously won a Bronze Medal at the International Science Fair (ISF).
