John, the man behind @thebamabrit on TikTok, spent a week travelling through South Africa in March 2026. The self-described Bama Brit landed back in the US, and the withdrawals hit almost immediately.

He posted a clip on TikTok on 16 March 2026, speaking straight from the heart to his followers. South Africa’s people and wildlife left a mark that no flight home could fix. He told followers he hoped South Africans truly understood what an extraordinary country they lived in.

More than just a holiday

South Africa has a way of getting under a visitor’s skin and staying there. First-time visitors almost always leave wide-eyed and already planning when they can return. The country is one of the most exciting travel destinations in the world. International arrivals keep climbing.

Wildlife alone is enough to stop most visitors in their tracks. Mzansi sits at the heart of one of the most biodiverse regions anywhere on the continent. Lions, leopards, elephants, and rhinos roam landscapes. For someone like John from Alabama, where wildlife means white-tailed deer, this is a completely different world.
