A South African family has perfectly captured the reality of owning a new car in the country after sharing a video of themselves camping out in their garage with their brand new Ford Ranger.
Instagram content creator @freshmenamapiano, who shares amapiano music content, posted the hilarious yet relatable clip on the 11 of July that has everyone talking.
The video shows the entire family refusing to leave their new vehicle unattended, even though it's safely locked in their garage. One family member sits in a chair wrapped in a blanket with a brick in her hand as she sleeps, while others lie on makeshift beds on the floor, clutching gardening tools as weapons.

"POV: there's a new car at home."
It perfectly shows what many South African families experience after making such a big purchase. The fear of losing their investment to criminals has led to this extreme but understandable behaviour.
The reality is that for many families, a new car represents months or years of saving and sacrifice. Losing it to criminals would be devastating both financially and emotionally, which explains the extreme protective behaviour shown in the video.

According to StatsSA, housebreaking remains the number one crime in South Africa, with an estimated 1.2 million incidents in 2019/20 affecting 891,000 households. This represents 5.3% of all households in the country, making the family's protective behaviour completely understandable.
The statistics show that motor vehicle theft affects 0.5% of South African households, with about 88,000 incidents occurring in 2019/20. Gauteng recorded the highest number of car theft cases with 45,000 households affected, followed by Western Cape and Eastern Cape.
