The pair has totally different backgrounds, but their love for each other made being together a splendid experience. Their first date was something out of a top-notch comedy skit as Klaas locked his car keys in the boot.

The incident was the perfect ice breaker, as they worked together to break into the car. After that adventurous trip to the beach, they’ve been inseparable.

They introduced each other to their family and friends, who celebrated their lovely union. Klaas met Lee’s family around Ramadan and remembered being very nervous:

“Meeting your partner’s family is a big deal, and I did not want to mess things up.”

Both families supported the couple’s relationship and held a blended engagement party last year. Things started to get a bit rocky when they began to plan their wedding.

“They asked him to make everyone’s lives easier and just convert to Islam. That broke my heart because I couldn’t even begin to imagine what he felt during that moment.”

Klaas refused to convert to Islam because he knew he wouldn’t be doing it genuinely. The couple agreed that if he had caved in, the matter would have turned into bottled-up resentment.

Finding an imam to marry them

The couple finally found an imam who was thrilled to marry them. The religious leader encouraged both families to be present during the ceremony and dress in their traditional attire to celebrate the couple’s diversity.

Abdah and Luvo will get married in September and hope to have their Xhosa wedding ceremony sometime next year in the Eastern Cape.

Embracing each other’s culture

The diverse couple ensures to always celebrate each other’s cultures. Klaas participates in the Eid and Ramadan festivities, and Lee is always excited to learn about the Xhosa culture.
