On 17 September 2025, TikTok user @tumelodjalpha posted a clip of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla ‘Lucky’ Sibusiso Mkhwanazi during his appearance at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The short but telling moment showed him opting to pour and drink his own water rather than accepting it from others.

Within a few hours, the video had gained over 10,000 likes and more than 1,000 shares, drawing mixed but largely supportive reactions online. Many netizens suggested his decision reflected caution, with some saying they too would not easily trust anyone in such a tense environment.

Inquiry into corruption in SAPS under scrutiny

The commission, chaired by Justice Madlanga, is probing allegations of corruption, political interference, and criminal networks within the South African Police Service. Mkhwanazi, who is a Lieutenant-General and currently serves as Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, was the first witness called to testify. At the centre of his testimony are claims that the Political Killings Task Team was unlawfully disbanded, a move he insists was designed to shield certain politicians and police figures from scrutiny. His choice to serve himself water may have seemed small, but to many watching, it became a symbol of distrust and awareness of hidden dangers.

During questioning, Mkhwanazi explained his earlier July briefing, which sought to inform the public of the challenges faced by the SAPS. He pointed to criminal infiltration, corruption within the justice system, and political interference as issues stalling progress in investigations. According to him, the document was not a personal effort but one created through collaboration across SAPS units, highlighting how systemic the problems have become.
