A South African family celebrating a little boy's birthday got more than they bargained for on 4 October 2026, when President Cyril Ramaphosa walked into the venue where they were and took time to meet them personally.

The footage, shared on TikTok by @athigeleba, the Head of Digital Communications in the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa, shows Ramaphosa crouching down to speak with the eight-year-old. He asked the boy his name, his grade, and even joked that the boy was older than him, claiming to be seven. When he confirmed he was in Grade 2 and doing well at school, Ramaphosa beamed with delight.

The president then turned to the boy's two sisters and elder brother, greeting each of them warmly before wrapping the birthday boy in a hug.

A personal connection with the president

When the parents stepped forward, the encounter took on a deeper meaning. The father told Ramaphosa that they had actually met before, when the dad was still a young boy. His late father had known Ramaphosa personally, including through cattle and hunting. Ramaphosa immediately recognised the name and said he knew the grandfather well, telling the eldest son to carry on his legacy.
