A couple seated at a café terrace near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris became an unlikely internet sensation after a video showed them calmly sipping drinks while flames raged in the background.

The Straits Times shared the footage on 20 October 2026. Behind the relaxed pair, burning trash sent flames shooting into the night sky across the street, yet neither of them appeared to register anything out of the ordinary.

The scene unfolded against the backdrop of a weekend that French authorities described as some of the worst civil unrest the country had seen in recent years. Nationwide demonstrations over the rising cost of living, which began on 17 October 2026, quickly turned violent. More than 2,510 people were taken into custody, and over 3,000 retail shops were damaged or looted across France, with total destruction estimated in the hundreds of millions of euros.

Paris under emergency measures

The French government moved swiftly in response. Partial curfews were declared from the evening of 19 October through the morning of 20 October in Paris, Lille, and Lyon. In Paris specifically, public demonstrations were banned after 20:00, with a strict local curfew beginning at 23:00. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offered to resign, though President Emmanuel Macron rejected the move. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu did not rule out declaring a full national state of emergency.
