JOHANNESBURG — The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomed Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene's resignation as the MMC for Transport and PA councillor in Johannesburg on 25 July 2025.
The DA's Johannesburg Caucus leader, Belinda Kayser Echeozonjoku, welcomed Kunene's resignation and called for a full investigation into his connection to murder-suspected Katiso Molefe. Kayser-Echeozonjoku said the Council must investigate all the contracts and procurement processes at the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
The party also called for an investigation into the contractors contracted for the repair of Lilian Ngoyi Street, which was destroyed in a gas explosion in 2023. She called on Morero to respond within seven days. The DA will approach law enforcement if Morero fails to act accordingly.

Why did Kunene resign?
Kunene announced his resignation on 25 July 2025, three days after the South African police Service found him at the Sandton house of Molefe. Molefe was arrested and charged with the murder of DJ Sumbody after the police linked the gun to actress Tebogo Thobejane's attempted murder.
PA president Gayton McKenzie suspended Kunene and launched an investigation into his connections with Molefe. McKenzie said he was heartbroken when he announced Kunene's suspension, but said that he was confident that he would be cleared of the allegations.

Kunene defended himself and said that he was at the house to accompany one of the journalists set to take over the online publication he owns. He said that the publication needed an exclusive interview to improve the platform's revenue and pageviews. He showed the police that he had no prior knowledge of where Molefe lived.

"Collapsing like dominoes. Thanks to our Lieutenant-General."

Dada Morero reacts to Kenny Kunene's resignation
In a related article, Briefly News reported that Dada Morero, the Johannesburg Mayor, reacted to Kunene's resignation. He welcomed his letter announcing that he was stepping down.
Morero said that the Council cannot investigate Kunene. He said that because Kunene resigned as a councillor, the matter was outside the Council's jurisdiction.
