JOHANNESBURG — The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is taking action against one of the officers KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi implicated during his testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry's public hearings.
According to IOL, JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that Johannes Makgatle, who has been in the K9 unit since 2005, is under investigation. The JMPD initiated an international investigation into allegations that he abused state resources to assist murder-accused Katiso Molefe. Molefe was arrested on 23 July 2035 for the murder of Oupa "DJ Sumbody" John Sefoka.
JMPD officer linked to Molefe
Mkhwanzi testified that Molefe is a close associate of the officer, Makgatle. Molefe reportedly contacted Makgatle and told him that there was a suspicious vehicle outside his house. Makgatla then fetched Molefe and ran the vehicle's registration system using state resources. He confirmed for Molefe that the vehicle was a police surveillance vehicle and took him home.

Mkhwanzi also alleged that Makgatlew renewed vehicle licenses for Molefe in exchange for personal rewards. He said that Makgatle used his position for Molefe's benefit.
"This demonstrates a pattern of unprofessional and unlawful conduct by an officer abusing state resources to support criminal associates," he said.
What do we know about Katiso Molefe?
Molefe was arrested in his Sandton, Johannesburg home on 21 July. He was arrested while he was out on bail for the murder of Vereeniging-based engineer Armand Swart in April 2023.
Molefe appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on 22 July 2025 and was charged with the murder of DJ Sumbody. He was denied bail and was incarcerated at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre. This is the same prison where attempted murder accused Vusimusi "Cat" Matlala was held in custody.
