“Too Warm for That”: Pretoria Residents Brace for Possible Snow As Major Cold Front Nears Gauteng

Pretoria could be dusted with snow as early as Monday, 10 August 2026, after the latest forecast from Vox Weather extended a potential snowfall zone northward into Gauteng and towards the capital.
The update marked a notable shift from earlier projections, which had limited the best chances of Gauteng snow to the province’s south-eastern areas, including Nigel, Benoni and Vereeniging.
What the forecast says
According to the latest Vox Weather map, light snowfall of roughly 1cm to 5cm is possible across a broad stretch of Gauteng, reaching towards Pretoria, on Monday and Tuesday, 10 and 11 August. Confidence for the Pretoria area, however, remains low to medium.

Higher accumulations are expected farther south and east, particularly near Vereeniging and into parts of Mpumalanga, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
The forecast hinges on the behaviour of a developing cut-off low following a strong cold front expected to arrive on Sunday, 9 August. A small shift in the system’s track could push the snow zone significantly in any direction. Surface temperatures will also need to drop low enough for snow to reach the ground rather than turning to rain on the way down.
Beyond snow, Gauteng should brace for a sharp drop in temperatures and between 15mm and 30mm of rain within 24 hours on Monday, with isolated thunderstorms also possible across the province.
Travel warnings for long weekend
The system is expected to cause major travel disruptions for those heading to Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State over the long weekend. Van Reenen’s Pass and other mountain routes could be affected or closed if heavy snowfall materialises. Motorists have been reminded of the 2024 snowstorm, when vehicles were stranded for hours as severe winter conditions brought major routes to a standstill.
