A Vox Weather meteorologist stepped in front of the camera on 5 August 2026 to deliver news that had South Africans reaching for their blankets. The forecast warned of a significant winter system building behind a cold front, with the worst of it expected over the long weekend of 8 to 10 August 2026.

The meteorologist was upfront about the uncertainty, noting that confidence in the extended forecast remained low given how far out the system was. Cut-off lows and snowfall are notoriously difficult to pin down at that range, she explained, adding that even small shifts in the storm's track or moisture levels could dramatically alter where rain and snow would fall. What Wednesday's weather looked like

Before the long weekend drama, a separate cold front was set to arrive on Thursday. Ahead of it, Wednesday brought its own challenges. A yellow level 1 marine warning was issued for the Western Cape coast, flagging damaging winds and high seas. Parts of the Free State, southern North West and Mpumalanga faced light frost in the early hours, with Bethlehem recording a bitter minus 2 degrees Celsius.

Warmer conditions told a different story in the Eastern Cape. Berg winds pushed temperatures well above average, with Gqeberha and Port Elizabeth both expected to hit 27 degrees. Gauteng, meanwhile, faced a cold start but a sunny afternoon with maximums climbing above 20 degrees.

By Thursday, the front was forecast to bring showers and much colder conditions to the south-western regions. Friday was expected to see it fizzle out, leaving only light showers along the southern and Eastern Cape coastline.
