GAUTENG - A reformed gangster is calling on South Africa to get tougher on criminals.
Ayoob Toffie, a former South African gang member and convicted criminal, made the comments following a week of bloodshed related to gang violence in the country. Four people, including two Anti-Gang Unit members, were killed in Reiger Park on 7 August, while 11 people were killed in the Western Cape in three shootings in the space of less than 24 hours.
Toffie, who served roughly 21 years in prison following a double life sentence for a fatal 2002 cash-in-transit heist, stated that stiffer sentencing is what ultimately changed the course of his own life. Toffie underwent a religious transformation behind bars, and after being released on parole, he now works as a motivational speaker and anti-crime activist.

What Toffie said changed him
Speaking to eNCA about continued gang violence, he said that police visibility does help reduce criminal activity but is not enough on its own. In his view, the deeper problem is a justice system that repeatedly releases offenders on bail, only for them to reoffend.
“Police visibility is always there. It makes it difficult for any criminal to move around and do his things. However, it doesn't mean that it is going to stop. I think it would minimise it, but at the very same time, the community are tired of situations where cases are not being prosecuted, guys going out on bail,” he said.
Speaking from personal experience, he said that the severity of his sentence, with no legal directive allowing early release, forced a genuine reckoning with his future.
"Because of the deterrence, because of the sentence that was placed before me without any legal directive, it forced me to a point to understand that my life is over," he said.

Police Commissioner urges community to speak up after Reiger Park shooting
Briefly News reported that Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane weighed in on the Reiger Park murders.
Two members of the Anti-Gang Unit were killed after they responded to a shooting in the area in Gauteng.
Acting National Police Commissioner confirmed that specialised investigative units have been mobilised to track down the killers.
