A TikTok video of a street vendor selling snacks at R5 a piece has South Africa divided. Bman Buffalo posted the clip from Mabopane Station in Pretoria, Gauteng, and it did not take long for viewers to start asking hard questions.
In the video, the vendor’s spread includes a range of recognisable branded snacks, including Knorr and Snack-It products, priced at just R5, with chocolates going for R7. The prices are so low that most people watching could not decide whether to be amazed or suspicious.
Where are the goods coming from?
Informal traders selling cheap snacks at taxi ranks and train stations around Pretoria and Johannesburg are not uncommon. However, the prices on display in Bman Buffalo’s video raised eyebrows even by those standards. Viewers flooded the comments section with theories, and two kept coming up: the goods are either past their expiry date or sourced from theft.

One commenter put it bluntly, saying the vendor likely did not stock the goods himself, pointing to the possibility that the products were bought cheaply from someone who had obtained them outside normal retail channels.
