GAUTENG — The Democratic Alliance (DA) has confirmed it will vote against the Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) Motion of no Confidence in National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza.
This is despite the party previously raising concerns about her conduct during President Cyril Ramaphosa's impeachment proceedings.
The motion, tabled by EFF leader Julius Malema in June 2026, is scheduled for a parliamentary vote at 2 pm on Wednesday, 26 August. It centres on Didiza's decision not to contest Ramaphosa's urgent high court application to interdict the parliamentary impeachment process.

DA's position on removing Didiza
In a statement issued on Wednesday, DA parliamentary leader George Michalakis said the party viewed the removal of Didiza as "premature" and not the correct mechanism for improving Parliament’s effectiveness. Michalakis said he had held a meeting with Didiza on 11 August, during which he formally raised the DA's concerns about Parliament's leadership and its ability to function as an independent institution.
Following that meeting, the two sides reached agreement on several proposed reforms.
"I trust we will continue to engage the Speaker on these matters," Michalakis said. She has the support of the DA in this, and I hope her own party will equally back her in making Parliament more effective."

Opposition parties ask Didiza to recuse herself
Briefly News previously reported that opposition parties wanted Thoko Didiza to recuse herself from matters related to the Section 89 Impeachment Committee.
African Transformation Movement (ATM) leader Vuyo Zungula announced the collective decision before the committee’s first sitting on 1 June 2026.
Zungula clarified that parties are not calling for Didiza’s removal as Speaker, but specifically for her recusal from this impeachment process.
