Taxi Boss Joe Sibanyoni Claims DJ Sumbody Was Targeted Because of Their Close Ties

GAUTENG - A taxi industry heavyweight has made a startling claim before a high-profile commission, suggesting that the murder of beloved musician Oupa "DJ Sumbody" Sefoka may have been connected to his friendship with him.

Joe "Ferrari" Sibanyoni appeared before the Madlanga Commission and told the panel that he believed Sefoka was killed because of how close the two had become. DJ Sumbody was shot dead in Johannesburg in November 2022.

Sibanyoni told the commission that his bond with Sefoka went back decades. He had first known Sefoka's father through the taxi industry, a relationship that stretched back roughly 30 years, and had grown close to the musician as a result.

Two attacks, one common thread

Sibanyoni also disclosed that he knew Seunkie Mokubung, better known as DJ Vettys, who survived a shooting in 2024. He connected the two incidents, telling the commission that both men had been part of his inner circle, either through business or personal relationships.

"The attempted life of DJ Vettys, and Mr Sefoka being killed, it was a matter of people that are close to me," Sibanyoni said.

When commissioners asked him directly whether he was suggesting the two musicians had been targeted specifically because of their proximity to him, Sibanyoni confirmed it without hesitation.

"Correct," he said.

Sibanyoni also testified that taxi boss Joe ‘Ferrari’ Sibanyoni has told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry about his conversations with Minister of Police Bheki Cele about criminal networks in the taxi industry before an attempt was made on his life.At the heart of Sibanyoni's submission to the Commission is a written letter he sent to Minister Cele. In it, he identified himself as a well-known taxi owner in Pretoria and warned Cele that the killings of taxi operators across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal were being orchestrated by a cartel with deep roots inside the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Taxi bosses entourage turns heads

Briefly News also reported that Joe 'Ferrari' Sibanyoni turned heads when he arrived at the Madlanga Commission on 28 August 2026 flanked by a large group of suited men. The men, all dressed in matching black suits, white shirts and ties, drew immediate attention from those present and watching online. South Africans were divided over whether the show of numbers was genuine protection or a deliberate act of intimidation.
