Warrant of Arrest Issued for Disbarred Advocate Malesela Teffo After Court Appearance

GAUTENG — The Legal Practice Council (LPC) has confirmed that a warrant of arrest has been issued for disbarred advocate Malesela Teffo, following his unauthorised appearance at the Johannesburg High Court.

Teffo showed up unannounced on Monday during the attempted murder trial of alleged kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and four co-accused, where he attempted to address the presiding judge despite being barred from practising law. According to eNCA, Ignatius Briel, the Gauteng Director for the LPC, confirmed that Teffo remains struck from the roll and is not legally permitted to practise law anywhere in South Africa.

Briel said the council had found Teffo in contempt of the original striking-off order, and that the court subsequently granted a contempt order, which gave rise to the current warrant of arrest.

Briel added that SAPS had previously been unable to locate Teffo at his known addresses. The LPC is now coordinating directly with the police to ensure the warrant is executed without further delay.

Readmission process not initiated

Briel also clarified that Teffo has not taken any steps towards formal readmission to the legal profession. Under LPC rules, a struck-off advocate seeking reinstatement must submit a formal application served directly on the council. The applicant is required to demonstrate rehabilitation and to show how the issues that led to their disbarment have been resolved.

The application is reviewed by both the relevant provincial council and the National Council to assess whether the individual is fit and proper to practise. This process alone can take up to six months before the matter proceeds to court, where the applicant must convince a judge that rehabilitation has occurred and that readmission is warranted. No such application has been received from Teffo.
