South Africans are feeling the economic pinch, but that is not stopping them from taking well-deserved breaks. According to data released by the Department of Tourism, South Africans took 21.2 million overnight domestic trips during the first half of 2026, a 4% increase from the same period last year. Even more impressive, holiday travel jumped by 36% to 5.2 million trips, despite an overall dip in domestic tourism spending.

The takeaway? Mzansi travellers are getting smarter with their money, choosing value-driven staycations over expensive overseas flights.

With Tourism Month in full swing, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has emphasised that affordability remains top of mind for domestic travellers, calling on the hospitality industry to keep experiences competitive and accessible.

If you want to explore the best of South Africa without overspending, here is how you can maximise your budget and redefine local luxury.

1. Shift your definition of "luxury"

According to market research from the Global Wellness Institute, travellers around the world are shifting toward rest and wellness, taking over 1.2 billion wellness trips annually. But luxury doesn’t have to mean five-star price tags or excessive itineraries. Often, the real luxury is simply having the time and space to switch off.

"Value in hospitality is not simply about finding the lowest rate," says Murray Nell, General Manager of Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa.

"It is about how much of the experience is brought together for the guest, the setting, the space, genuine hospitality, good food, and the freedom to slow down."

By prioritising destinations that offer inclusive perks, like complimentary breakfasts, scenic grounds, or free local transport, you get a high-end feel without hidden costs.

2. Trade international flights for regional gem travel

Instead of spending tens of thousands of rands on international airfare and visas, look for world-class experiences in your own backyard.

Places like the Cape Winelands offer international-grade scenery, rich history, outdoor activities, and top-tier dining just a short drive away. Choosing a driveable destination slashes your travel budget instantly, leaving more room to enjoy local restaurants, spa treatments, or wine tastings.

3. Take advantage of built-in amenities

When booking accommodation, look for places that offer all-in-one relaxation so you don't spend extra money constantly traveling between activities.

Look out for places that allow guests to curate a complete getaway on-site. Choosing an option where everything is within easy reach eliminates unnecessary transport and planning expenses.

4. Support the local economy

Traveling locally isn't just budget-smart, it directly impacts the country. According to official figures cited in the Department of Tourism release, tourism directly sustains almost 954,000 jobs across South Africa. Domestic tourism helps sustain these livelihoods while supporting local hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and small businesses.

"Every domestic trip contributes to a much broader tourism community," notes Nell.

"Tourism Month is an important reminder that we have extraordinary destinations here at home and that, by experiencing them, we also support the people whose livelihoods depend on tourism."

A memorable, restorative holiday doesn't require a maxed-out credit card. By traveling closer to home, taking advantage of local value, and focusing on rest over extravagance, South Africans can enjoy a luxury experience for a fraction of the cost.
