SOUTH AFRICA — Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya’s tenure with the South African Police Service (SAPS) came to an end after police management recorded his departure as a dishonourable discharge. The official classification followed the submission of a resignation letter by his legal representatives right as his internal disciplinary hearing was starting.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed in a statement shared on Facebook that SAPS terminated Sibiya's employment immediately upon receiving the notice. Sibiya is facing sexual crimes charges after he was arrested in September in Johannesburg.

Under police regulations, an officer who steps down while actively facing internal disciplinary actions cannot leave through a standard voluntary resignation. Consequently, because his departure occurred during an ongoing case, the service designated his exit as a dishonourable discharge. Sibiya is currently incarcerated at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre as he continues to fight to be granted bail.

Immediate administrative termination for former deputy commissioner

Mathe explained that the submission of the resignation by Sibiya's legal team instantly finalized the end of his employment contract with the police service. This administrative move officially concludes his service record under the standard disciplinary framework applied to members who resign during active proceedings.
