South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has admitted that the Proteas failed to handle the pressure imposed by Australia during their 214-run defeat in the first Test in Durban on Wednesday, 14 October 2026. The result leaves the hosts with plenty to address before the second match in Gqeberha.

The defeat was Bavuma’s first as Test captain. He also endured a difficult outing with the bat, scoring just three runs in the first innings and one in the second.

Several of his teammates struggled to build substantial innings, although Aiden Markram and David Bedingham showed some resistance.

“There were a few soft dismissals and that includes me, but I definitely don't think that the guys threw caution to the wind and played recklessly because I just think there's a certain level of pressure that exists when you play Australia, and some guys were just not accustomed to that, but we should be better prepared for the second Test,” Bavuma said.

Proteas captain expects difficult dressing-room conversations

Bavuma said the result was disappointing and admitted that South Africa’s performance with both bat and ball fell below the required standard. He indicated that the players would need to reflect on what went wrong before addressing the problems collectively.

“This is not the way we wanted to start the series and I still think the emotions are high after this defeat, so you want to wait for the emotions to settle before you get into some tough conversations about some obvious things we should've done better,” he said.

South Africa had initially put Australia under pressure on the opening day, reducing the visitors to six wickets down. However, they couldn't maintain that advantage as the match progressed.

Australia recovered to post 390 in their first innings, with Matt Renshaw scoring 190. The visitors then set South Africa a target of 421 after declaring their second innings on 314/6.

The Proteas were dismissed for 206 in their final innings, with Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood taking six wickets for 49 runs.

Gqeberha Test presents an opportunity to respond

Bavuma also addressed South Africa’s limited exposure to red-ball cricket before the series. The Proteas had not played a Test since defeating India away in November 2025.

However, the captain refused to use the lengthy break as an excuse for the defeat.

South Africa must now prepare for the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, scheduled to begin on Sunday, 18 October 2026.

The hosts will need greater consistency from their batting line-up and a stronger response when Australia seize momentum. Bavuma’s message is clear: the team must learn from the Durban defeat and be better prepared for the next challenge.
