Why Mamelodi Sundowns Are Still Favourites to Win Betway Premiership Despite Early Struggles

  • Mamelodi Sundowns have yet to lose a game this season but have struggled to impress in several matches
  • The analyst pointed to Sundowns' squad depth and lessons learned from last season's league loss to Orlando Pirates
  • A football analyst spoke exclusively to Briefly News about what the Brazilians' early form means for their title prospects

Mamelodi Sundowns have cut an unconvincing figure in the early stages of the 2025/26 season, but a football analyst believes the Brazilians still have more than enough to retain their status as the team to beat in the PSL title race.

Sundowns opened their campaign with a victory over Polokwane City in the MTN8, followed by a hard-fought league win against TS Galaxy. Their inconsistency was further underlined when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs, leaving supporters with questions about the side's form heading into the season proper.

Why Sundowns are still favourites

Speaking exclusively to Briefly News, a football analyst acknowledged the club's shaky performances but stopped short of writing them off as genuine title contenders.

"Mamelodi Sundowns have not lost any game this season, but they've struggled in most of their games, which has been a concern to some of their fans this campaign," the analyst said.

He pointed to squad quality as the primary reason Masandawana should not be underestimated, regardless of their uninspiring results so far.

"The Brazilians are still favourites to win the competition, bearing in mind that they have a higher-quality squad compared to others," he added.

Lessons from last season's title loss

The analyst also noted that the Tshwane giants would be drawing on painful memories from last season, when they surrendered the league title to Orlando Pirates, as motivation to sharpen their performances going forward.

"Masandawana have learned from last which they lost the league to Orlando Pirates," he said.

Despite the slow start, Sundowns remain unbeaten, and for the analyst, that foundation, combined with their superior resources and depth, is enough to maintain their position as the frontrunners for the championship.
