The South African Football Association (SAFA) has officially confirmed Pitso Mosimane as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana, ending weeks of negotiations between the two parties.

SAFA announced Mosimane's arrival at SAFA House on the day of the confirmation, stating: "Coach Pitso Mosimane arrives at SAFA House ahead of the confirmation as the new Bafana Bafana coach. He takes over from the former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos."

Mosimane returns for second Bafana spell

This marks Mosimane's second stint as national team coach. He first took charge of Bafana following the 2010 FIFA World Cup, signing a four-year deal before being dismissed after the team failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. During that period, he also served as an assistant to Carlos Alberto Perreira and Joel Natalino Santana.

The 60-year-old had been without a club since departing Esteghlal FC in January 2025, but publicly maintained his desire to lead a national side. He has consistently spoken about his ambition to win the Africa Cup of Nations and guide a team to the FIFA World Cup.

SAFA approval and contract agreement

SAFA's National Executive Committee formally approved Mosimane as Hugo Broos' successor on 8 August, but finalising the terms of his contract took a further three weeks of negotiation before both parties reached agreement.

Mosimane brings considerable experience to the role, having won multiple Premier Soccer League titles with Mamelodi Sundowns and guided Egyptian giants Al Ahly to successive CAF Champions League titles. His appointment is widely seen as a high-profile move by SAFA as it looks to rebuild Bafana Bafana's standing on the continental and global stage.
