Springbok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk has built a reputation for more than his performances on the rugby field, with his vehicle choices over the years offering a window into his life off it.

The 34-year-old is a two-time Rugby World Cup winner, having been part of the South African squads that claimed the title in 2019 and 2023. His club career has spanned several countries, including stints with the Lions, Sale Sharks, and the Yokohama Canon Eagles in Japan, before he returned to South Africa in 2026 to sign a two-year contract with the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

De Klerk's passion for 4x4s

De Klerk's preference for capable, go-anywhere vehicles has been evident since the early days of his professional career. In 2014, he shared a glimpse of his Mitsubishi Pajero on social media, calling it his "new toy" at a time when he was still making a name for himself in professional rugby.

That fondness for rugged motoring persisted well into his career. De Klerk was later seen with an Ineos Grenadier, a deliberately boxy 4x4 fitted with a BMW-sourced six-cylinder engine, which suited his reported taste for outdoor adventure.

His collection is not confined to off-road vehicles, however. De Klerk has also been photographed with an Aston Martin alongside his wife, Miné, revealing a more refined side to his automotive interests. He has additionally been associated with BMW and Mercedes-Benz vehicles, though specific models have not been publicly confirmed.

Following his return to South African rugby, De Klerk took on a role as a Toyota South Africa brand ambassador, through which he received a new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, which is reportedly worth over R1.5 million.

The SUV is powered by a 2.8-litre GD-6 diesel engine producing 150kW and 500Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel-drive system. The Prado aligns naturally with De Klerk's well-documented interest in capable off-road machines, while also fitting the profile of a high-profile brand partnership.

Taken together, the progression from his early Pajero to an Aston Martin, an Ineos Grenadier, and now the Land Cruiser Prado charts the journey of a player who has grown from a promising South African prospect into one of the Springboks' most recognised figures on the international stage.
