Former Springbok coach Nick Mallett has identified game management as the key area Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu must refine to cement himself as a reliable Test flyhalf, even as the young playmaker loses his starting berth for Sunday's Rugby Championship clash against Australia.
Speaking on the Talking Boks podcast, Mallett was clear that Feinberg-Mngomezulu's raw abilities are not in question. The 22-year-old has started South Africa's last five Tests, including all four matches against the All Blacks, but will begin the Optus Stadium encounter in Perth from the replacements bench, with Handré Pollard reclaiming the No. 10 jersey.
Where Mallett sees room for growth
Mallett's central argument is that Feinberg-Mngomezulu needs to read the quality of possession before committing to a decision. When South Africa receive poor-quality ball, particularly after a lineout where defenders are flooding through, the flyhalf should prioritise carrying himself or using the boot rather than automatically distributing to the backline.
Equally, Mallett stressed that when an attack has run through several phases without gaining meaningful ground, the flyhalf should be willing to reset through the kicking game instead of forcing another play. The former coach is not concerned about a lack of skill, Feinberg-Mngomezulu can run, pass and kick effectively, but believes the defining step in his development is selecting the right option at the right moment.

Mallett also pointed to situations where the flyhalf might spot a defensive gap and look to attack personally, when the better choice is to release the ball to a position where South Africa hold a numerical advantage.
Mallett backs Jantjies for starting role
Alongside his assessment of Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Mallett welcomed the decision to hand Herschel Jantjies a starting opportunity at scrumhalf. Jantjies will wear the No. 9 jersey against Australia, with Morné van den Berg named among the replacements.
Mallett described Jantjies as an accomplished scrumhalf with strong technical qualities, highlighting his speed at the breakdown, the accuracy of his passing and his ability to exploit defensive gaps as an attacking threat.
With Van den Berg available to provide impact off the bench, Mallett viewed the selection as a well-balanced decision that gives Jantjies a genuine platform to show what he can offer at international level.
