A news broadcast by Channel News Asia broke down, step by step, how a glacier collapse along the Nepal-Tibet border triggered one of the most destructive floods to hit communities inside Nepal, with the footage going viral on 28 August 2026.

The broadcast used a 3D animated topographical model of the Himalayan mountain range to walk viewers through the disaster. According to the explanation, the event began when an enormous section of glacier ice and rock broke away and crashed into the valley below. The debris swept towards the Lende Kola river system and temporarily blocked it, forming a natural dam. As water built up behind the unstable blockage, pressure mounted until the barrier gave way entirely.

How the Flood destroyed communities downstream

What followed was a powerful surge of water, mud and rock that tore downstream, destroying roads and bridges and smashing through settlements in its path. The flood then travelled further into Nepal, reaching communities that had no warning of what was coming.

Scientists are still working to understand exactly how the initial glacier collapse developed into a flood of that scale. Rescue and recovery teams were racing to reach isolated communities cut off by the destruction, with officials expecting the full picture of the damage to become clearer as access improved.
