Voting irregularities in Malawi
The ruling party said that irregularities in the vote count were discovered in almost half of the country's districts in the general elections held on Tuesday, 16 September 2025. Police in Malawi have also arrested eight data clerks for allegedly tampering with the election results.
Both President Lazarus Chakwera's Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and its main rival, the Democratic Progressive Party of former president Peter Mutharika, claim to have won the presidential vote.

Many are not convinced by the results. It is alleged that the 70-year-old President Lazarus Chakwera has lost his bid for a second term. The economy in Malawi has taken a deep dip, and the cost of living has risen exponentially in the last five years.
Irregularities found in 13 districts
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced the results on Friday, 19 September 2025, with the 85-year-old Mutharika leading with three out of four councils. The MCP announced that it had found irregularities in 13 of the 28 districts.
A complaint has been laid with the MEC to conduct a physical audit. Eight officials have been arrested around the capital, Lilongwe, on result manipulation allegations. This comes after an election returning officer allegedly attempted to commit suicide. It is reported that the officer was offered bribes to tamper with the election results.
The MEC chief, Annabel Mtalimanja, said the commission would not be pressured to speed up its verification work. The commission has eight days to announce the final results.
