- Mzansi singer, Lira, is the first African women to have her own Barbie doll
- Lira was part of a global campaign to honour extraordinary women with a doll in their likeness
- The campaign also celebrates Barbie's 60th anniversary
Mzansi singer, Lira, has become the first African women to be honoured with a Barbie doll created from her image.
Earlier this year on International Women’s Day (8 March), a global campaign called #MoreRoleModels was launched to honour extraordinary women with a doll in their likeness. This was also part of Barbie’s 60th anniversary.
According to TshisaLive, Lira made history joining global women such as British supermodel Adwoa Aboah, US actress Yara Shahidi, US filmmaker Ava DuVernay, Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka and others.
The doll was revealed in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning. It sports Lira’s signature short hairstyle and dons an oversized African print top created by local fashion designer, Sello Medupe, as well as oversized earrings made by a local jewellery-maker.
“I’m just so very excited. A real mini-me and everything she’s wearing is proudly South African,” said an overwhelmed Lira.
“I’m deeply honoured to be Barbie’s first African role model and am excited to align with a brand that is on a mission to show girls more diverse role models,” added Lira.
Lira went on to say how she always celebrated her skin tone and natural hair.
“I have always been someone who endeavours the celebration of my skin tone and natural hair, and it is amazing to see this reflected in my doll. This is an enormous gesture and affirmation that the world is celebrating Africa for who we are, and I am very grateful.”
Here are some tweets from people who have congratulated and commended Lira on having a Barbie roll that represents Africa.
Just over a week ago, Briefly.co.za reported that once again Mzansi was left wondering if Cupid has abandoned local celebs. Another couple is splitting up; this time songbird Lira and her husband of 9 years, Robin Kohl, are calling it quits. She made the announcement on social media.
Local singer, Lira, took to her Instagram account to let her fans and followers know that she and her hubby of many years, Robin Kohl, are getting divorced.
Lira admitted that she and Robin, who is also her manager, have been living separately and have now decided to make it public that they're splitting.
