Born in 1976 in the Eastern Cape, Black Coffee clawed from township hardship to global icon status. In 2015 he received a Grammy nod for Pieces of Me. By 2025, he's SA's richest musician at R540 million net worth, per Forbes Africa, with hits like Drive (Drake collab) and a Submotion Orchestra remix empire.

The level of success that Black Coffee has amassed has gained him a status as somewhat of a gatekeeper in his genre of music, at least in the eyes of fans. An online user confronted another popular house music DJ, saying that he would be far in his career if he had not beefed with Black Coffee.
