A local man became an unlikely internet star after getting accidentally locked inside a shopping mall after closing time. TikTok user @tshegofatsobrian.01 posted the clip on 3 September 2026, and it spread quickly across social media.
In the video, the young man documents his disorienting experience roaming empty mall corridors long after closing time. He shouts into the open space, his voice echoing through deserted hallways, visibly unsure of how to get out. Despite admitting he was "shaking in his boots," he kept his commentary lighthearted and funny throughout, which is a big part of why viewers could not look away.

Voices in the dark save the day
After some time wandering alone, he heard voices in the distance. Rather than bolting in the opposite direction, he followed the sound and eventually tracked down staff members who were still on the premises. They guided him to an exit, and he made it safely back to his car, which was parked on the top level of the mall.

For many viewers, the humour came with a side of genuine panic. Several people pointed out that, given the combination of horror films and South Africa's reputation for crime, being trapped alone in an empty mall after dark would have sent them over the edge. The fact that he managed to turn the whole ordeal into a funny video made it all the more entertaining.
