WASHINGTON, USA — US President Donald Trump has publicly criticised Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, saying the couple showed "great disrespect" to the British Royal Family, in comments made at the White House on 2 September 2026.
Trump was responding to a reporter's question about the couple's reported departure from the United States and return to the United Kingdom. He confirmed he was pleased by the news and made no effort to conceal his long-held views on the pair.

The president described his personal history with the monarchy, noting that he had formed a "really good relationship" with the late Queen Elizabeth II and had known King Charles for many years.

"I know him as Prince Charles and King Charles. I've known him for a long time. He's great," Trump said.
Against that backdrop, he expressed clear disapproval of how Harry, who recently visited Lesotho, and Meghan conducted themselves. He accused them of treating the Royal Family with disrespect and noted his displeasure with Markle. He added that she was disrespectful to King Charles and the Queen.
Trump went further, suggesting he would have taken a harder stance than the Royal Family did.
"I wouldn't have taken him back, frankly. If I were the royal family, I would not have taken him back," he added.
