Legendary voice actor Peter Cullen, best known for bringing Optimus Prime to life across the Transformers universe and lending his voice to the beloved Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, has died at the age of 85.
Cullen passed away on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. His family confirmed the news, saying he "passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family" and that he "was held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide." No cause of death was disclosed.
A voice that defined generations
The Canadian actor's career spanned decades of iconic voice work. His portrayal of the noble, deep-voiced Optimus Prime became one of the most recognisable characters in animation and film history, featuring across multiple Transformers TV series, films and video games. Beyond the Autobot leader, Cullen was the gentle, melancholic Eeyore in countless Winnie the Pooh productions, showcasing the extraordinary range that made him one of Hollywood's most sought-after voice talents.

Cullen's last voice acting credit was the character Thaedus in the Prime Video animated superhero series Invincible, a fitting final chapter for a career built on larger-than-life figures.
He is survived by four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay, as well as three grandchildren.
