South African music royalty showed up in full force to celebrate DJ Tira's milestone 50th birthday on 25 August 2026, and it was Black Coffee's tribute to the Afrotainment boss that had everyone talking. Footage from the star-studded soiree captured the global DJ delivering a moving speech that left little doubt about the esteem in which Tira is held by his peers.

Standing before a room filled with some of the biggest names in the industry, Black Coffee did not hold back when saluting his fellow KwaZulu-Natal heavyweight. He described Tira as an irreplaceable trailblazer whose work within their shared province stands alone.

Black Coffee went on to highlight Tira's commitment to nurturing emerging talent, noting that the Afrotainment founder kept seeking out and signing new artists even when many of those same artists later turned him down or chose to go independent.

"Your contribution has been the biggest in this province."

The tribute carried extra weight, as Tira and his wife, Gugu Khathi, returned the love by attending Black Coffee's own 50th birthday celebrations.

DJ Tira reflects on 50 years and what comes next

The man of the hour eventually took to the stage himself to look back on a career that has shaped the sound of South African music. He spoke about building Afrotainment into a respected brand and about the artists he helped launch, including Big Nuz and DJ Cndo, who became household names under his guidance.

At 50, however, Tira says his focus is shifting. Rather than remaining at the centre of the spotlight, he wants to use his platform to lift others.
