Former police Captain William Manku (53) took the stand at the Polokwane High Court on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, offering a glimpse into his relationship with his daughter, Skeem Saam actress Amanda Manku, as his murder trial continues. The court heard a deeply personal testimony about a father-daughter bond that was once strong but later grew cold.
William is accused of the murders of Amanda's mother, Gladys, and grandmother, Lettie, in Makgophong on 4 May 2021. The case is formally being heard in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate's Court.
A bond that once was close
On the stand, William painted a picture of a warm relationship he once shared with Amanda during her younger years. "She and I were very close back then. Even when she started dating, she didn't even have a problem or shy to come to me to talk about boyfriends," he told the court.

That closeness began to fracture in 2017 after he disciplined Amanda following news that she was pregnant. "From then she started distancing herself from me," he said, describing a gradual withdrawal that took a toll on their bond.
Despite the growing distance between them, William noted that they continued to have some form of communication, suggesting the relationship never completely collapsed.
Denies Murder Motive
The former police captain has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, firmly rejecting any suggestion that troubles in his marriage to Gladys drove him to commit the murders. He denied that marital conflict was a factor in the deaths of the two women.
The trial continues to unfold as the court works through testimony linking his personal relationships and the events of that fatal day in May 2021.
