South Africa has quietly been exporting some of the world's most compelling screen talent, and a viral countdown video has Mzansi talking. The clip, shared by the YouTube channel Safrolebs SA Celebs, runs through a list of local performers who traded SABC and e.tv roles for Hollywood stages, and the names on it range from familiar faces to genuine surprises.
From Generations to global screens
Former ‘Generations’ actress Maggie Benedict, who played Akhona Griffiths on the long-running SABC soap before departing in 2014, is among those featured. She has since appeared in American productions including ‘The Good Doctor’, ‘New Amsterdam’, and ‘The Romanoffs’, all while keeping her personal life firmly out of the public eye.
Atandwa Kani built a steady local base through productions such as ‘Mofango’ and ‘90 Plein Street’ before landing the role of young King T'Chaka in the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster ‘Black Panther’ in 2018. He also voiced the same character in the animated series ‘What If’.

Thuso Mbedu's journey is arguably the most celebrated on the list. After small roles in ‘Isibaya’ and ‘Scandal’, she landed ‘Isithunzi’, which earned her an International Emmy nomination. That visibility opened the door to ‘The Underground Railroad’ on Amazon Prime Video and a starring role opposite Viola Davis in ‘The Woman King’. In 2025, she was cast again alongside Davis and Idris Elba in the Paramount fantasy film ‘Children of Blood and Bone’.
Hollywood heavyweights with SA roots
Arnold Vosloo, born in Pretoria and trained at what is now Tshwane University of Technology, became a household villain through ‘The Mummy’ and later appeared in ‘Blood Diamond’ and ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’. Charlize Theron left South Africa as a teenager, eventually picking up an Oscar and starring in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and ‘Atomic Blonde’.

Bohang Moeketsi, known locally through ‘Queen Sono’ and ‘Seriously Single’, officially stepped into Hollywood territory in December 2024 with ‘Wesley: A South African Christmas’, which premiered in Los Angeles.
