Grace Mondlana has opened up about the heartbreaking loss of her puppy Bella, sharing the full story in a series of emotional selfie-style videos filmed from what appeared to be her bedroom.

The videos were made in response to a follower, @judykhoboka4, who had asked where Bella was. Grace, lying down and wearing a chunky knit headband, said she could no longer avoid answering the question.

“I can't ignore this question for good. This is what happened. Bella is gone. At first, I really thought that it is the poppy face, as I did experience the same thing with Kai when he was still four months old. But with Bella, it was a little bit strange because the things that were happening took a little bit longer than they were supposed to. The pooping and vomiting happened constantly from, I think, a week after I got her, which was very concerning. So I took her to the vet, and I spent a lot of money because that particular vet kept on saying the same thing and giving me the same medicine. So in the third week, I thought to myself, I have to give Bella away. I'm not coping with her around and my injury. It took me another week to do that because I did not want to let go of her yet. I thought I would keep trying, but we both just kept on getting worse.”

Bella's health struggles

Grace explained that Bella had been unwell almost from the moment she brought her home. Constant vomiting and unusual bowel issues began roughly a week after Bella's arrival, which Grace initially hoped was a passing phase similar to what she had experienced with her other dog, Kai, as a puppy. When the symptoms dragged on well beyond what she expected, she took Bella to a vet, visiting multiple times and spending considerable money, only to receive the same diagnosis and medication each time.

Adding to her distress, Grace was herself recovering from an injury at the time. Moving around quickly to clean up after Bella became increasingly difficult, and the situation began to affect both of them.

“I kept on getting angrier at myself for being unable to move around and turn around whatever that she would make in the house quickly. And that worked with madness. So finally, about two weeks ago, three minutes before the closet, I took her to the SPCA. You know what they said to me, Ma'am? This has gotten to a point where it is considered animal cruelty because she is internally bleeding, and keeping her alive is just hurting her more. I was not aware of any of that. I took my puppy there just so she could get a new family. I don't want to give her away to people that I know.”

After weeks of trying, Grace made the difficult decision to surrender Bella to the SPCA rather than rehome her with someone she knew. She was worried that watching Bella grow up with a familiar family would make it impossible to let go.

The moment at the SPCA

What happened at the SPCA doors was something Grace had not anticipated. Arriving just three minutes before closing, she was told by staff that Bella was internally bleeding and that keeping her alive any longer would amount to cruelty. Grace said she had no idea the situation had deteriorated to that point.

Staff told her there was no option to rehome the dog. Grace recalled them saying. When she asked for a moment, she was told it needed to happen immediately. Bella was put down on the spot.

"There's no taking this dog anywhere, ma'am. We have to put her down. Like right now. In front of you now. Do you want to witness it?"

Grace said it took her several weeks before she felt ready to share the news publicly, wanting to adjust to life without Bella first. She and her other dog, Kai, are now navigating what she described as "a new normal.”
