Nollywood has been left in a state of mourning following another death of one of its most recognisable veterans. Francis Duru, best known for his iconic role in the 1995 film Rattlesnake, died at 57 after a brief illness, leaving fans and colleagues across the continent in mourning.

His family broke the news on his official Instagram page during the early hours of Friday, 23 October 2026. In a brief yet heartfelt statement, they confirmed his passing and asked for compassion during what they described as an incredibly painful time.

"We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen."

The news comes just months after Duru publicly addressed speculation about his well-being. In June, footage circulating online allegedly showed the actor in a deteriorating physical state. Duru firmly rejected those claims at the time, insisting that the images were "fabricated." His death has since silenced any remaining doubt about the seriousness of what he had been facing privately.

A legacy rooted in Nollywood history

Duru's career stretched across decades, and his name became synonymous with Nigerian cinema's golden era. His breakthrough arrived in 1995 when director Amaka Igwe cast him as Ahanna in Rattlesnake, a role that cemented his place in Nollywood folklore and introduced him to a generation of fans.

Off screen, Duru built a devoted family life. He is survived by his wife, Adokiye, with whom he shared 23 years of marriage as recently as May this year. Together, the couple had four children, though they endured the devastating loss of their son Ifeanyi in 2024.

Supporters flooded social media with touching tributes, honouring the Nollywood legend and the indelible mark he left on African cinema.
