Taxi members were alleged to have attacked an e-hailing driver and burned two other vehicles. The people of Soweto protested and boycotted all taxi operations in the area.

Maponya Mall also closed down after residents called for a strike to allow for investigations to proceed smoothly. People on social media expressed their disappointment with how the government handled the issue.

People online pointed out that the government did not prioritise the death of an e-hailing driver at the hands of taxi drivers. One TikTokker, Tsietsi Mahlasela, sparked conversation and went viral after saying:

“Ministers were so quick to address the podcast issue, but they were nowhere to be found on the Uber driver situation.”

South Africans agreed with what Mahlasela insinuated that ministers were associated with taxi drivers. The people of Mzansi thought more could have been done about the volatile incident.

Government speaks out about Maponya Mall incident

On Friday, two days after the Maponya Mall incident, the South African government addressed the brutal killing of an e-hailing driver. It is reported that MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, met with all public transport operators in Soweto to find lasting solutions to issues affecting the sector.

The stakeholders also called for law-enforcement agencies to prioritise the investigation into Wednesday night’s incident and bring those involved to book.

Ministers boycotting racist podcast

Earlier this month, the popular Open Chats Podcast made inflammatory comments about the Coloured community. Many South Africans were offended by the content and expressed themselves online.

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, was one of the prominent politicians who voiced out his concerns and calls for the shutdown of the podcast. He stood up for the Coloured community, but things quickly backfired after social media users found old racist tweets published by the minister.
