A woman named Phumzile Nkabinde shared that she allegedly had to pay R975 for a ticket when she parked at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, better known as Menlyn Mall. The woman was mum when asked how she got to that total, possibly engaging in a hoax.

On 4 September, 2025, Phumzile shared a picture of the amount on the Pretoria mall's electronic parking metre on her TikTok account. She didn't share the reason for her trip to the mall, only stating in her post's caption that she almost paid close to R1 000.

In the comment section, she clarified that she ended up paying R15, but did not explain how the initial charge was so high.

What are Menlyn Mall's parking rates?

According to the mall's website, during the week, Monday to Friday, shoppers pay the following:

  • 0-2 hours: R10
  • 2-4 hours: R20
  • 4-6 hours: R30
  • 6 or more hours: R60

On weekends, there is a flat rate of R15, while non-refundable lost tickets cost R70.

At the time of the article's publication, the number of social media users who entered the woman's comment section almost reached the amount Phumzile had to pay the mall. People also shared their own shocking experiences, contributing to a larger conversation about Menlyn Mall's parking system.

"One time, I left the mall, and their machines weren't working, so they left the booms open. I kept that ticket as I was coming back the next day and was curious to see how much it would be. It was over R1 000."
