South Africa could be heading into one of its hottest and driest summers in recent memory. The South African Weather Service SAWS issued a warning on 1 September 2026, alerting the public to a potentially powerful El Niño forming in the Pacific Ocean that is already measuring at levels consistent with a very strong event.
According to SAWS, the 2026/27 El Niño could intensify even further as spring unfolds. The latest seasonal forecast points to below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures for the bulk of the country between October and December, with similar conditions likely to carry into early 2027.

Heatwaves and drought on the horizon
The weather service cautioned that the combination of reduced rainfall and rising heat could trigger severe heatwaves, drought conditions and serious strain on water supplies across the country. SAWS did note, however, that El Niño does not automatically guarantee drought, since regional impacts can differ significantly from one cycle to the next.

El Niño is a natural climate pattern linked to the warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. During El Niño years, southern Africa typically experiences hotter and drier conditions, which can have a knock-on effect on agriculture, dam levels and household water security.
